Canada is actively recruiting skilled workers from outside its borders to plug critical labour gaps and bolster the economy.

This is according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The federal agency confirmed the recruitment push is being managed through the Express Entry system, a points-based immigration platform that identifies and invites top-ranked candidates to apply for permanent residence.

How Canada’s Express Entry works?

The process begins when an applicant creates a profile and enters a candidate pool.

IRCC then runs periodic draws, selecting individuals with the highest scores to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. Once invited, candidates complete and submit a full application, which the department reviews before issuing a final decision.

Three federal programmes operate under the Express Entry umbrella: the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Programme, and the Federal Skilled Trades Programme. Each targets a distinct group of applicants depending on their work history, qualifications, and trade expertise.

What applicants need to prepare

IRCC has urged prospective candidates to begin their preparations early. Key steps include having educational credentials assessed for those who studied outside Canada, completing an approved language proficiency test, and organising the documentation needed to support a permanent residence application.

“We use a system called Express Entry to manage applications and invite skilled workers in priority categories to apply for permanent residence,” IRCC said, emphasising that the initiative is designed to respond to diverse workforce needs across the country.

The agency framed the programme as a structured pathway for individuals seeking to build a new life in Canada, noting that candidates in priority occupational categories stand the strongest chance of receiving an invitation during regular draw rounds.
